At Levels 1-3, one summative OSATS is the minimum that is required to evidence the trainee's level of competence. A trainee who wishes to demonstrate evidence of full engagement with the training programme should consider providing a range of formative OSATSs each year, showing progress in skill acquisition towards independent practice.
At level 4, the first stage of independent practice, 3 OSATs are required to demonstrate competence at this level. Across the three OSATs, where possible, it is considered good practice to have competence verified by different consultants.
For level 5, one summative OSAT signed by a consultant or suitable professional working independently at that level, is required.
