Who is this course suitable for?
The Essential Contraception for Abortion Care providers course is aimed specifically at Abortion Care Providers working in primary care settings. It provides an interactive half day with scenario-based learning, presentations, time for discussion, questions and role play. It is relevant for Abortion Care providers needing an introduction to Contraception and provides a useful update for more experienced staff.

If you don't fall into the above categories but are still interested in attending, we welcome you as a candidate but want to highlight that some of the terminology used, you may not be familiar with. We recommend getting in touch with the events organiser to discuss whether they believe that you will be able to keep up with the course content or if they would recommend any pre-learning before attending an event.

What will attending this course allow me to do?

Essential Contraception for Abortion Care Providers is a half day course to help you develop the skills and confidence to consult with patients about contraception.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

Develop the skills and confidence to consult with patients about their sexual and reproductive healthcare needs
Recommend an appropriate method of emergency contraception.
Review the COC, POP and injection contraceptive methods
Carry out sexual health risk assessments
Identify when patients are at risk of STIs

Please note, obtaining our qualifications does not automatically enable you to perform any particular task, that is up to employing organisations to decide if an employee is competent to do. You need to consider any requirements that are stipulated by commissioners with whom they are contracting to deliver services. FSRH does not set rules as to who can do what. We just give advice on best professional practice and will only support practice in line with our guidance and standards.

We recommend consulting with your employer to understand their requirements and discussing whether they believe this training to be suitable for you. You can also reach out to a Faculty Registered Trainer (FRT) for a discussion. Let them know about your ambitions regarding focusing your work on sexual health services going forward and decide which path would benefit you the most.

Booking an event.

Although the FSRH have recently started to host some Essentials events, you will find that most events as still hosted by approved facilitators.

Once you find an event you are interested in, please contact the organiser on the details they have provided to book a space. Speaking to the organiser of the event, they may have facilities to allow for invoices to be generated for employer payment, but this is not something we stipulate as a requirement.

If you have reached out to an event facilitator and haven't heard back, please be mindful that many of them are hosting these events in addition to their own full-time employment and may just take a little longer to reply. You can certainly get in touch with us to see if we have any additional contact details that the facilitator has given us permission to share. If not, then we are certainly happy to pass a message on to ask for them to get in touch with you directly. Do be mindful however that as they are not employed by us, we cannot control or dictate whether they will choose to get back in touch with you - if any event is sold out then there may just be too many people to contact.

Completion of this course.

Essential Contraception for Abortion Care Providers is not a competency-based course and it is not assessed. Attendees will be provided with a workbook, which contains supporting documents for use on the day and for future reference. Attendees will receive an electronic Certificate of Attendance usually around within a week to 10 days following the event.
